DOT regulations require a minimum of 15 minutes to log a pre-trip inspection before operating a CMV. A quality pre-trip, including a Whip Around inspection of your rig, should take at least this long.

Taken from the front of the tractor or dolly fifth wheel and right of center.
Must capture:
Fifth wheel plate flush with the trailer apron with no visible air gap or light showing between them.
Fifth wheel release arm fully recessed and locked.
Release arm spring in a relaxed position with no tension.
Indicator rod (if present) flush with the front of the fifth wheel plate.

Must clearly show the locking mechanism firmly locked around the shank of the kingpin.
Use flash and 2x zoom if available.
If you have trouble getting underneath the trailer to take this photo, please slowly make a hard right u turn with your rig. This will put the back of the fifth wheel in a position where you can take the photo without having to get underneath the trailer.

Document anything needing attention or repair with photos and driver/inspector notes.
Compliance will be monitored by checking daily for completed Tractor Whip Around Inspections.
If an inspection is not completed, you will be asked to stop at the next safe place and complete the inspection.
When posting a screenshot of your load in the Sling tractor thread, the appropriate Trailer Whip Around Inspection will also be checked.
If not completed, the same procedure will apply.
