1. Plan your route – Check weather and road conditions, road closures, and state & federal weather advisements. Stay updated on any advisories or warnings throughout your trip. If your route appears unsafe or you feel uncomfortable, call 5CL immediately so that we can potentially negotiate with FXG linehaul for a route adjustment. Please see Rules section below for additional information to this guideline.
2. Drive for the road conditions – SLOW DOWN. Driving at the speed limit may be legal but is often too fast for snow-covered or icy road conditions. Watch your surroundings, look ahead, and keep a safe buffer zone around your truck whenever possible. Always maintain a safe driving distance (no mater the conditions) and do not travel as part of a pack in bad weather or poor visibility. If the leader of the pack makes an error, chances are high you will too. Finally, you should NOT use jake brakes (engine brakes) on icy or snow-covered roads.
3. Distracted driving – there is never an appropriate time to be using any handheld electronic device while you are driving. This becomes even more critical when driving in adverse weather conditions. If you must use your handheld electronic device, use a hands-free device, or pullover in a SAFE place. The safety of the driver, passengers, and others on the road take precedence over any phone-related activities.
4. Seat belt – compliance with this policy is mandatory, and failure to adhere to seatbelt usage guidelines may result in disciplinary actions.
5. Use good, solid judgement – If the weather is so severe that you need to get off the road, do it. Find a place to get off the road safely, call 5CL, and wait until conditions are safe. Do not try to be a hero. Do the right thing and park if the ‘going gets too rough’. Know your limits. You are not invincible.
1. During active snow/ice conditions and high winds in your route of travel, you must obtain 5CL management approval, in writing (Sling or email), before accepting the load, however, DO NOT decline the load until talking to 5CL management.
2. When you are assigned a trip transporting an EMPTY single or double trailer, during active snow/ice conditions and high winds in your route of travel, you must obtain 5CL management approval, in writing (text or email), before accepting the load.
1. It is your responsibility to ensure that your truck and trailer(s) are ready for the journey and the weather ahead. Make sure to report any DEFECTS found during pre-trip and post-trip inspections on WhipAround immediately. If an immediate safety issue is discovered during your inspections, call 5CL immediately so that we can address or repair the issue before you start your trip. Be mindful of the presence of other vehicles or equipment, as well as slippery surfaces that might cause you to slip and fall.
1. Do not park on snow-covered shoulders, in snowbanks, piles of snow, etc. If 5CL must pay for a tow to get your vehicle out because you parked in a pile of snow, on a snowy shoulder, in a snowbank, etc., and it was not due to an EMERGENCY or a BREAKDOWN REQUIRING YOU STOP IMMEDIATELY, your pay will be docked up to $300.00 for the first offense. For a second offense, you will be responsible for the entire cost of the tow. In general, watch where you are parking. Remember, even at below-freezing temperatures, your res will be warm and can melt right through the snow and ice you park on top of, causing you to become stuck.
2. When HOOKING/UNHOOKING in designated areas at a hub you will face the above penalties if not previously authorized, in writing, by 5CL management to hook to equipment that is sitting in deep snow, snowbanks, ice, mud, or would put you in the position of becoming stuck.
1. Drivers are required to obtain written approval (via text or email) from 5CL management for any roadside services provided by Ryder, REL, Penske, etc. This includes tow truck services, regardless of distance or situation, tire service of any kind, or lockout service. It is essential to try to reach out to 5CL management before seeking assistance from any roadside service provider. Failure to do so will lead to an appropriate payroll deduction.
1. Drivers will be awarded $200.00 for EACH PASSED Roadside Inspection (RSI. In the case of team drivers, the driver that was driving at the time of the passed RSI will be awarded the bonus. It will be paid as a one-me bonus in the paycheck deposited on 4/4/2025. There is no maximum payout for passed RSIs.
a. Common reasons to fail a roadside inspection include Speeding, Flat Tires, Nails/Screws in the Tire, Missing IFTA/NY HUT Decals, Missing FXG US DOT Decals, etc.
b. Any Failed RSI, Preventable Accident, violation of any of the FXG Driver Action KIs, or incident caused by driver negligence, between the dates above, will cause the Winter RSI Bonus to be forfeited. To receive the RSI Bonus, you must be an active driver on 4/4/2025.
